License Class Syllabus

 

This schedule shows topics to be covered in each class session.  It also provides reading for "homework" which should be done before each session.  The book for this course is the ARRL 4th Edition "Now You're Talking", and will be provided to all who pre-register.  Other books, such as Gordon West’s or the old “NYT” are welcome, but class references will be from the new ARRL "Now You're Talking".

 

Fee = $30.00 (includes cost of book and room)

Classes held Mon and Wed evenings 6PM to 9PM

Class Session 1-   Ch. 1, intro to 2

Subjects:  Introduction to Amateur Radio.  Hands-on demonstrations and discussion.

Radio spectrum and licensing, Technician license and privileges, FCC rules & regulations.

 

Class Session 2-   Ch. 2, review Ch 1

Subjects:  Introduction to Amateur Radio.  Hands-on demonstrations and discussion.

Radio spectrum and licensing, Technician license and privileges, FCC rules & regulations.

 

Class Session 3-   Ch. 3, 5

Subjects: The Metric system, Basic frequency/wavelength, Amateur bands, Propagation.

 

Class Session 4-   Ch. 5, 6, 7

Subjects:  Basic electronics, series and parallel resistance, inductance and capacitance, circuit components, practical circuits.

 

Class Session 5-   Ch. 9, 10

Subjects:  Antennas, feedlines, VSWR and RF safety.  Packet and Radioteletype communications, Selecting equipment.

 

Class Session 6-   Ch. 2, 4, 8

Subjects:  Electrical Safety, Home and mobile stations, Test equipment, Station accessories, Operating skills, FM & repeaters, interference, spurious signals, Exam procedures.  Review and relax!

 

  Students may take exams at either one of two upcoming test sessions- 1st Saturday 9AM Murchison or 3rd Saturday 2PM at St. Ed's.

 

ARRL Test Session- Saturday 9AM Murchison

W5YI Test Session- Saturday 2PM St. Edwards
