THIS
WEEK

CERT training! Sorry about the CERT rescheduling nightmare!
Last Saturday turned out to be gorgeous but we still had
instructor issues. But never fear, we have new training
dates: April 10 and May 8.
* * *The time has changed too.* * * Both classes are now
from 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM.
I attached a map to the AFD training academy on Shaw Lane.
We will be indoors and outdoors for search and rescue training,
so dress for the weather. The concrete glares a lot, so
if it is really sunny I recommend sunglasses too.
Let Tiffany know your class preference if you haven't already
- tiffany.taylor@ci.austin.tx.us. She is not in the office
this week, but she will be checking in on Thursday. We will
schedule a big final disaster exercise with all CERTs at
a later date.
Valli
is giving a disaster preparedness presentation on Wednesday
to the Prime Timers senior group at 12:00 PM at the First
English Lutheran Church, 3001 Whitis Ave, Austin, TX 78705.
You are welcome to attend to learn how she gives her presentations.
CERT
Activation!
*********************
About 12 UT Red Cross Club and CERT members responded at
the 60-unit apartment fire on March 31! They helped with
Red Cross family casework, looking for clients among the
crowds and escorting them to a holding area, looking for
lost pets and returning them to their owners, and worked
with the Office of the Deans of students to relocate students,
help with their course rescheduling and computer data retrieval.
Way to go!
GRADUATION
*****************
Even though CERT will not be totally completed, we are still
planning on the April 29th graduation celebration at 6:00
PM. Yay! Valli will be mailing out invitations next week.
CPR/AED
TRAINING
***************************
Valli is working on scheduling CPR/AED training by EMS in
May. Details soon!
LANDOWNER
WORKSHOP

There is a free Hill Country Landowner Workshop that looks
like it will cover wildfire issues on May 1... Call or e-mail

512-263-8878 or mfagan@tnc.org.
Location:
Barton Creek Habitat Preserve - 11617 FM 2244, Austin.
Time: workshop 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM plus optional preserve
tour 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

Nature Conservancy, NRCS, and the City of Austin will address
the participants on a variety of subjects including brush
control, prescribed burning, invasive species, and riparian
zone management. The workshop will focus on the practicalities
of managing land in the Hill Country, from costs to resources.
SPECIAL
DELIVERY
*************************
I will be having my baby on Monday (if not before then),
so I will be out of touch for a while. Valli, Tiffany, and
our summer intern, Mollie will be covering for me. Feel
free to contact them with questions or concerns. They will
probably be sending the weekly e-mail with my computer's
software, so you still might receive e-mail from my address.
Here is their contact info:
Valli Wasp, Disaster Ready Austin, valli.wasp@ci.austin.tx.us
Tiffany Taylor, CERT, tiffany.taylor@ci.austin.tx.us
Sincerely,
